Surrogacy Costs

In some societies there is extreme sanctity associated with the child bearing capability of a woman. In fact, that is ‘THE’ thing which makes, according to some, a woman. Indian society, to a large extent falls in this category. I have heard instances, where girls I knew were not treated well, because they couldn’t have a baby. Or in some cases, if they knew they had this issue, invariably the groom’s parents would reject the girl. It is so heart breaking in an era where women are nowhere less than men and in an era where we are moving in top speed towards technological advancement, childbirth should be a pivotal aspect for the dignified existence of a woman. In such cases or sometimes due to repeated miscarriages, if a woman is unable to conceive, the last resort would be to go for surrogacy. This is article will take this ahead and talk about surrogacy costs.

The Basic Cost of Surrogacy

Whether you go through an agency, traditional or gestational surrogacy and some more factors are influential in the maternity expenses of a surrogate mother. There are a number of other aspects within surrogacy for which a couple has to pay. The biggest chunk of the cost is the surrogate mother cost. You cannot for sure say how much a woman who will be the surrogate mother would charge. They can fluctuate greatly. All the same, to give you a rough idea, a surrogate mother will typically charge in the range of $13,000 and $25,000. This is just the basic of what they need to be paid. If a couple’s friend or family member is open enough and willing to do so, the couple will be lucky. Of course if the couple finds a surrogate mother on their own, then the money involved will be surely a bit less. The overall cost of surrogate birth can run between $50,000 and $100000. Again there are variables and other logistics which again need the couple to put in cash to pay for surrogacy costs. Also check out how to become a surrogate mother.

Variables and Additional Costs

After the surrogate mother’s fee, there are a number of significant heads under which expenditure is done. These are -

Medical Expenses
Needless to say, the surrogate mother will not be paying for any of the medical expenses borne in due course of conceiving, during pregnancy and delivery the baby. So right from health supplements, fertility medications to IVF to sperm preparation and transferring of frozen embryo and any other hospital expense, will have to be paid by the couple. Fertility medication cost on an average $800 to $1000, sperm preparation per cycle counts for around $300 on an average and IVF can be anything between $5000 to $8000. Finally, frozen embryo transfers will cost in the range of $750. In addition to this, if there is a C-section or multiple birth, it can drastically affect the surrogacy costs on the higher side.

Agency Charges
Along with the above, the agency the couple might approach will have to be paid some fee for registration and finding a suitable surrogate mother and then after the first trimester. All in all the couple should not be alarmed if they have to shell out anything close to $15,000.

Amongst other things, in case it is a gestational surrogacy, where in the embryo made up from the original parents egg and sperm is transferred in the surrogate mother’s uterus, the gestational surrogacy costs will be around $800 to $1000. Finally, charges for legal representation will also have to be considered in the total surrogacy costs, which can be approximately around $1000. Any other expense regarding the surrogate birth will have to be considered, ultimately, which might have been missed out here. This is where I end my treatise on surrogate motherhood costs. Take care!
